Bumper Types Explained

Cult of PiN advertises on the order of sixteen bumper behaviours that alter gravity, motion, visibility, or durability. You do not need a spoiler sheet for every internal name — you need a reading system so late Acts stop feeling random.

Why bumper literacy matters

Destroying bumpers is the campaign clock. Variants that blink out, slide, or rewrite gravity punish autopilot cradles that worked on Act I. Pair this page with Tables Overview and Missions & Rituals.

Core reading categories

Durability and blockers

Some bumpers exist to soak hits or gate lanes. Endless Multiball used to ignore Blocker immunity rules incorrectly; Hotfix #2 removed Blocker immunity during Multiball in Endless so that mode stays honest. If your Endless plan was “Multiball deletes blockers for free,” rebuild it.

Motion bumpers

Moving bumpers invalidate memorised bank shots. Watch the travel path for one full cycle before committing a precious spare to a heroic line.

Visibility blinkers

Blink-out bumpers punish greed. Peek camera (Controls) helps you confirm whether a target is currently solid before you release a cradled shot.

Gravity and trajectory writers

Gravity shifters and unusual reflect angles (Hotfix #6 even retuned Cult of Bone lower bouncers) change post-ramp behaviour. Ball weight interacts with those angles — the same patch notes warn that mileage varies by ball.

Altar bumper

The central Altar is not “just another HP sponge.” Filling it unlocks or upgrades Rituals. Hotfix #6 prevents the Ritual Altar panel from opening when every ritual is already at minimum mission count — less UI spam mid-chaos.

Boss bumpers

Boss bumpers are their own species: telegraphs, tentacle walls, devour timers. Strategy lives on How to Beat Bosses.

Act pressure and bumper HP

As Acts climb, bumper HP outpaces naive damage. Glyph shops must answer the board you see, not the fantasy you wanted at Act I — Glyph Progress and Glyph Tier List.

Hotfix #5’s overkill flame UI tips you when current damage exceeds current Act bumper HP — useful feedback for knowing you can pivot toward missions/Rituals instead of raw farming.

Curses, traits, and bumper chaos

Table traits and Curses can rewrite bumper rules for the rest of a run. Easy difficulty no longer applies Curses after Hotfix #6, which makes bumper learning cleaner for newcomers — Difficulty Guide.

Practical drill

Each Act, name three bumper behaviours out loud before your first plunge: e.g. “blinker top-left, mover on the right orbit, heavy blocker mid.” If you cannot name them, you are not ready to spend mana greedily.

Reading drill examples

Say the board: “blinker top, mover on the right orbit, heavy blocker mid, Altar centre, gravity shift near the left outlane.” If you cannot produce that sentence, you are not ready to spend rare mana on greedy multipliers. Overkill flame UI from Hotfix #5 tells you when raw damage already outclasses bumper HP — pivot to missions.

Page takeaway

Name blinkers, movers, blockers, gravity writers, Altar, and boss bumpers before the first plunge. Overkill flame UI means damage already outclasses HP — pivot to missions.

Reading the live board

Say three behaviours before the first plunge: blinker, mover, blocker, gravity writer, Altar, or boss bumper. If you cannot name them, you are not ready to spend rare mana on greedy multipliers. Hotfix #5’s overkill flame tells you when raw damage already outclasses Act bumper HP — pivot to missions.

Endless Multiball no longer treats Blockers as immune. Easy no longer applies Curses, which makes bumper school cleaner. Altar panels stay closed when rituals are already minimised. Pair this page with Tables Overview and the Build Planner.

Blockers soak and gate lanes. Movers invalidate memorised banks until you watch a full travel cycle. Blinkers punish greed unless Peek confirms the target is solid. Gravity writers and retuned Cult of Bone reflects change post-ramp behaviour by ball weight. The Altar is a progression device, not just HP. Boss bumpers are a separate species with telegraphs and devour timers. Overkill flame means you can stop farming bumpers and start lighting missions. Related: Missions & Rituals.
